With a resolute commitment to sustainability, Humanscale stands apart from other companies by going beyond simply reducing the negative impacts we create to creating positive impacts on our planet and people. As the climate crisis escalates, we recognize that merely reducing the negative impacts we cause is inadequate. This is why, as a company committed to a better future, over 70% of our products (by sales) are certified climate positive in 2023 and are starting to reverse some of the damage done to the Earth.

These products are ethically sourced, comprised of recycled and upcycled materials, and are made without toxins. Each time they're manufactured, they're paired with positive environmental actions Humanscale created to account for 110% of their embodied energy, carbon, and water values. In other words, they do more good than harm, and leave the world better off by existing.

Don't just take our word for it, though. These products are third-party certified by the Living Product Challenge (LPC). Launched by the International Living Future Institute, the LPC is the most rigorous test of sustainability and scores its criteria across seven impact categories.

The LPC certification process involves several stages and often requires several months to complete. The result, however, is a certified product that's not just sustainable, but regenerative, with the potential for widespread benefits to both people and planet.

It's also important to note that unlike most companies seeking to offset their footprint, Humanscale hasn't purchased carbon credits, as these are unregulated, and honest assessments of their real impacts can often be murky at best. Instead, we help execute projects with quantifiably positive impacts on our environment called Ă¢â‚¬Ëœhandprints'.

In a recent example, Humanscale sponsored the planting of over 6,000 trees as part of the Monarch HighForest Restoration Project in Mexico. Partnering with One Tree Planted, this action created habitat for endangered species, helped restore a crucial Monarch butterfly corridor, and sequestered over 15,612,000 kg of CO2e. In another, we sponsored the installation of solar panels at three affordable housing communities in Montclair, CA, saving residents a collective $7.4 million in electricity costs over the system's lifetime, along with a lifetime carbon benefit of 18,619,915 kg CO2e.

Between reducing a product's carbon footprint at every stage of its life cycle, maximizing its potential benefits, and pairing production with tangibly restorative actions, Humanscale ensures a positive impact from each of our climate positive products. For those keeping score, that's a whole lot more helpful than reducing harm or staying neutral.

Humanscale has a goal to have an overall positive impact on our planet. We started out with two climate positive products back in 2016. In 2024 that number grew to 29 and we are working on adding three more seating products to our planet positive catalog this month. By choosing sustainable products and practices you have the power to change the world with us.
